Betula utilis, the Himalayan birch, is a deciduous tree native to the Western Himalayas, growing at elevations up to 4,500 m. The white, paper-like bark was used in ancient times for writing Sanskrit scriptures and texts. In Ayurveda, it is known as Bhurja patra and is used for treating wound cleaning, earaches, diarrhea, bleeding, convulsions, and psychiatric diseases. The thin papery bark is very shiny,redish brown,redish white,with horizontal lenticles.
